Dribbling Introduction (Under 8)

Suggested Winter session for week 5 of the Under 8s. The theme of the Winter session is dribbling and shooting as described in the introduction.  As with all the Winter sessions, we will begin with the introductory dribbling skills associated with this session.  This is our fifth session indoors. Much of the material from week 5 will be geared toward setting up the ball for a shot. This is our way of introducing shooting technique as an extension of learning dribbling skills.

We are reviewing the Inside and Outside Cut and Lunge for setting up the shot along with introducing the new Scissors move that is very similar. We will also use these moves to set up a side shot.  Since we have the walls in our indoor training environment, we will take the opportunity to combine the dribbling skills with an introduction to proper shooting technique.  The walls will provide for repetitive demonstrations and practices.

Warm-up: Introductory Dribbling and Shooting Session with Slam

As the players come into the practice area, greet them and quickly organize them into games of Slam. Slam was introduced to the players in the last practice session.  It is easy to learn and pick up if a player was absent.  Once you get them organized, let them play while the other players make their way onto the playing area.  Continue organizing games of Slam and then sit back and let them play for a while as a general warm up.

After observing the players for a while.  Determine if they need to concentrate on their shooting technique.  If you have some suggestions, have each of them get a ball and demonstrate what you want them to concentrate on with respect to their shooting technique.

Now go over each of the dribbling skills for this session with the players having their own ball. Incorporate the moves in with the set up for a shot, that, in turn, can be used as preparation for shooting the ball against the wall or set of targets.  Allow the players to practice their moves in free space near a wall. They should use the wall as a shooting surface where they will receive their shot off the wall and quickly touch to another position along one of the other walls to repeat the dribble-move-set-up-shot practice.

Numbered Players Game

Prepare the field as in the Shooter's Game explained in the next session. Here we will have a short but relatively wide field with two large goals in the middle of the longer end.  Divide the group up into two teams and give each players a number. Position the players of one team on either side of their defensive goals and do the same for the other team.  See the diagram below.

Initially, the coach will call out a number. The players with that number will immediately enter the field and battled for the ball that the coach has passed into the playing area.  The object of the game is for the players to get possession of the ball and score upon the keeper-less goals.  Here we are stressing the use of their dribbling moves and setting up the shot.  Encourage the players to shoot at the earlier opportunity.

The coach should give every player a couple of chance with 1 v 1 situation.  Then, the coach may move on to 2 v 2 situation by calling out two numbers.  Continue in this manner giving praise when good situations occur.

Feel free to move on to 3 v 3. Other variations occur by requiring the players to run around the corner cone before entering the field, or making them do something silly before entering the field like a cart wheel or something.  In any case, have fun with it and take your time since each situation for the players is usually very intense.

Game: Shooter's Game

Play 4 v 4 or 5 v 5, depending upon numbers. A team may score on one of the large goals placed on the center of a wide, but short field. At every position on the field, the player's first decision should be to shoot at the large goal and score.  The game represents the attacking third of the soccer field. This game is good for shooting and finishing themes.

Warn Down: Homework Dribbling

Review the Inside-Outside Cut, Lunge, and Scissors and encourage them to practice this at home.
