Shooting and Dribbling Introduction (Under 9 and up)

Suggested Winter session for week 5 of the Under 9 and up. The theme of the Winter session is dribbling and shooting as described in the introduction.  As with all the Winter sessions, we will begin with the introductory dribbling skills associated with this session.  This is our fifth session indoors. Much of the material from week 5 will be geared toward setting up the ball for a shot.

We will continue to use the walls in our indoor training environment and combine the dribbling skills with proper shooting technique.  The walls will provide for repetitive demonstrations and practices. Also, we will continue with the 1 vs 1.

Warm-up: Introductory Dribbling and Shooting Session with Slam

As the players come into the practice area, greet them and quickly organize them into games of Slam. Slam was introduced to the players in the last practice session.  It is easy to learn and pick up if a player was absent.  Once you get them organized, let them play while the other players make their way onto the playing area.  Continue organizing games of Slam and then sit back and let them play for a while as a general warm up.

After observing the players for a while.  Determine if they need to concentrate on their shooting technique.  If you have some suggestions, have each of them get a ball and demonstrate what you want them to concentrate on with respect to their shooting technique.

Now go over each of the dribbling skills for this session with the players having their own ball. Incorporate the moves in with the set up for a shot, that, in turn, can be used as preparation for shooting the ball against the wall or set of targets.  Allow the players to practice their moves in free space near a wall. They should use the wall as a shooting surface where they will receive their shot off the wall and quickly touch to another position along one of the other walls to repeat the dribble-move-set-up-shot practice.

One vs One vs One World Cup Game

Organize the players into groups of four. Set up goals along the walls with enough room between the goals so as not to allow the groups to interfere with each other.  Designate one player as a keeper for the first game.  Here we are keeping the numbers small since World Cup is an elimination game.  We will adjust this later after the players have gotten a chance to play a while.

With the keeper in place, the game begins with the keeper serving the ball to the group of three players.  These players are attempting to score as a single person team on the goal. Once a player scores, this player is eliminated and play continues with the two remaining players. Please realize that all rebounds and missed shots off the back wall are all fair game for any of the players.  The idea is to shot and score. This is a 1 v 1 v1 or 1 v 1 game where the players attempt to get to the ball and score.

Rotate the keeper out as a field player and designate a new keeper.  Continue the game as above.  After everyone has had a chance to play keeper.  The winner is the player scoring first the most number of times.

As a variation to the elimintion of the winner players, set up an additional goal. This goal is designated for the players that eliminate themselves from their group's World Cup game by scoring first.  These players will play World Cup amoung themselves separately while their groups continue to finish up their play.

Team World Cup Game

Team World Cup is played in a similar manner as above except now we have teams of two or more players.  We can have three or more teams playing at the same goal.  You may set up one or more sets of goals with each goal representing a separate game of Team World Cup.

Game: Shooter's Game

Play 4 v 4 or 5 v 5, depending upon numbers. A team may score on one of the large goals placed on the center of a wide, but short field. At every position on the field, the player's first decision should be to shoot at the large goal and score.  The game represents the attacking third of the soccer field. This game is good for shooting and finishing themes.
